Ladies’ Night

When James Brown sang “It’s a man’s world,” he might as well have been talking about the world of music, where women are about as plentiful as a knife when you’ve got 10,000 forks — or whatever that Alanis Morissette lyric was. But as the Godfather of Soul also said, “It wouldn’t be nothing...without a woman or a girl.”

The lack of women in music is the focus of tonight’s Feminism & Co. topic, Playlist, a discussion curated by Elissa Auther and Gillian Silverman. Guests include Sarah Slater, a Westword MasterMind and the organizer of the women-focused Titwrench festival, and Westword contributor Ru Johnson, a hip-hop maven who once organized an all-female Wu-Tang cover band. Music historian Maria Elena Buszek will present an overview of women in music, while musicians Christina Whitaker, Bianca Mikahn and Brittany Gould will present the first musical performances ever for the Feminism & Co. series.

“We really tried to capture a diverse cross-section of the music that females are doing in Denver,” says Auther. “Sarah and Ru were really instrumental in that process; it was cool to learn there were interesting and ambitious women trying to raise the visibility of female musicians in town.”

Learn it for yourself tonight at 6 p.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, 1485 Delgany Street; tickets are $17 ($12 for MCA members). For more information, call 303-298-7554 or visit www.mcadenver.org.
