Beginning today and running through July 24, Norman Rockwell and the American Family, a collection of reproductions of the illustrator’s images, will be on display at the Aurora History Museum. In keeping with the 1950s and 1960s theme, the museum will show its own artifacts from the period, with costume jewelry, kitchenware, toy View-Masters and more on interactive display. “The museum opened in the 1970s, and because Aurora’s boom was during the ’50s and ’60s, much of what has been donated to us is from that era,” says executive director Jennifer Kuehner.

The museum’s focus in weaving its own collection in with the Rockwell images is to give a three-dimensional look at the post-war period and to engage younger visitors who may not be as familiar with the iconic American portraiture, she says. A full-fledged replication of a 1950s kitchen will be on display along with a lounge area where patrons can watch a film about Rockwell and play with Lincoln Logs and the like.

The museum is open Tuesday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free; for more information, call 303-739-6660 or visit www.auroramuseum.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: May 3. Continues through July 24, 2011
