Comic Freedom

Free Comic Book Day is quite possibly the greatest day of the year for comic book aficionados. That’s partly because all you need do to score free books is hit up a participating retailer, but it’s also because the day shines a light on an often underappreciated storytelling medium.

Started in 2002, Free Comic Book Day is designed to bring new and former readers into the stores while giving a particular shout-out to fans who never left. By simply popping into any number of retailers in the state today, you’ll have access to a grab bag of comics, including limited runs of The Tick, Captain America, Spider-Man and more. Many stores make an event out of it, inviting people to come in costume and party. “It’s our biggest day of the year,” says Wayne Winsett, owner of Time Warp Comics and Games, 3105 28th Street in Boulder. “We always try to make it special, with lots of costumes and free stuff. This year we’ll have the Batmobile from the Michael Keaton era on hand.”

Free Comic Book Day will kick off as soon as shops open today; for a full list of participating retailers, visit www.freecomicbookday.com.
