Air to the Throne

It takes just three skills to be an air-guitar master: technical merit, stage presence and airness. That last one is a bit of a mystery to both the audience and the judges, but for participants in the U.S. Air Guitar Regional Championships, it’s the one thing that will set them apart from other contestants.

Tonight marks the first step for a potential World Air Guitar champion’s long road to glory in Finland. Founded in 2003, the U.S. Air Guitar Championships was created by Kriston Rucker and Cedric Devitt to offer a means for America to come up with an official candi-date for the world championships. “When we found out America had never sent an official entry, we had to do something,” says Devitt. “It was a matter of national pride: Americans should dominate the air.” The winner of the regional competition will be sent to Chicago for the national finals in July; if victory is had there, he or she will be sent to represent our country in Finland.

The airness happens tonight at the Larimer Lounge, 2721 Larimer Street, at 8 p.m.; admission is $16 to spectate or $20 to partici-pate. If you’re interested in registering as an air guitarist, or for more information, visit www.usairguitar.com.
