Forget swimming: Event planners in Montrose have paired the 36th annual Black Canyon Ascent six-mile run on Saturday and the eighth annual Mission to Ride century bike race on Sunday with this weekend’s Montrose Wine and Food Festival for a triathlon worth traveling for. “I can’t think of any race as physically rewarding and visually stunning as the Black Canyon Ascent,” says race director Scott Shine. “You climb 2,000 feet from the valley floor and finish off in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, overlooking the canyon rim. This year is gravy because it’s timed with these other events, so you can wake up, get a good workout in the morning and then enjoy the wine festival.”

Registration for the Ascent is $45 at www.blackcanyonraces.com; the race starts on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. for walkers, 8 a.m. for runners.

Sunday’s Mission to Ride involves staggered starts beginning at 5:30 a.m. and a mass start at 7:45 a.m., with 30-, 40-, 60-, and 100-mile road-race options and 7.5- or 12-mile mountain-bike races. Register online ($40) at www.missiontoride.com.
