Chasing Chiles: Hot Spots Along the Pepper Trail takes readers on a wild ride with three obsessed capsicum “gastronauts” — Kurt Michael Friese, Kraig Kraft and Gary Paul Nabhan — who motor across the landscape of Mexico and the United States in a self-described “Spice Ship.” Their goal: to explore, through the lens of the chile pepper, climate uncertainty and biodiversity, and the impact they have on future crop farming and production. The book is part history lesson, part travelogue and part heirloom-chile recipe file.
“Dozens of long strings of dried crimson peppers called chiles de sarta hung from the beams of the roadside stands, ready for making moles and enchilada sauces,” the chile warriors — a chef, an ethno-botanist and an agro-ecologist — write in a section about crossing the border into the state of Sonora.
