Season of the Weird

Road-tripping season is coming up, and if the outlandish cost of gas has got you thinking about reining in the epic scale of your travels, despair not: There’s plenty of weird stuff to see in our home state. Just ask Charmaine Ortega Getz, who’s so enamored with oddball attractions in the Colorful state that she wrote a whole book about it: Weird Colorado: Your Travel Guide to Colorado’s Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets.

And it’s much more than just a listing of stuff. “It’s not exactly a conventional travel guide,” says Getz. “It’s all been extensively researched, and I always try to find out what was behind these attractions.” Attractions, for example, like Grandpa Jerry’s Clown Museum in Arriba, near Limon — “We’re talking thousands of clowns. It is not for the clown-phobic,” she warns. “And then there’s the entirety of Cañon City, which is home to no fewer than thirteen prisons and one prison museum.

Getz will talk about that and many other oddities today at 12:30 p.m. at the Parker Library, 10851 South Crossroads Drive. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required; you can do that at www.douglascountylibraries.org/newsevents or 303-791-7323. For more, don’t miss Westword’s Summer Guide, coming June 2, where Getz will highlight a few of her weird Colorado favorites.
