Taking it all off is all in a days work for members of Colorados busy burlesque community. But the various troupes rarely mingle while theyre doing it, and many are downright competitive, because after all, a girls got to make a living! It would, therefore, take a very special cause for them to throw aside the ongoing rivalries and spats, one like tonights Salute to the Legends of Burlesque, which brings together burlesquers from the metro area, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and Pueblo to benefit the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. More specifically, a portion of the funds raised at the event will be earmarked to help transport some of burlesques most treasured living legends to the Halls annual tribute weekend in June.

Theres not much of a retirement plan for burlesque performers, quips BurlyCutes Cora Vette, who organized the Salute, which takes place in conjunction with a nationwide network of similar galas. And I just hope that when Im seventy or eighty years old, someone does it for me. The Hall of Fames Living Legends, she adds, have so much to offer todays neophyte burlesque girls in terms of advice: They are really kind of amazing. Ive met a few of them, and they were the coolest, most fun people.
Such local stars as the lovely Midnight Martini, Vivienne VaVoom, Lola Spitfire and many others will star alongside hostess Cora Vette, beginning at 8 p.m. at Benders Tavern, 314 East 13th Avenue, in front of a giant video screen projecting the acts of the greats. That will set the stage ably for the modern interpretations: I told everybody to bring their most classic pieces the ones that are most consistent with what youd see back in the day, says Vette.
Admission is $10 in advance or $12 at the door; visit www.benderstavern.com. For more information, go to www.burlycute.com.
