There is no denying Warren Haynes knows how to shred. Rolling Stone named him one the 25 greatest guitarists of all time, and he has played with the Allman Brothers, David Allan Coe, the Dead and his own band, Gov't Mule. His most recent album, Man in Motion, is his first solo release in nineteen years, and while much of the gospel-soaked recording is a tribute to his North Carolina upbringing and includes entirely new songs, a few old ones creep in as well. "Real Lonely Night," for instance, was written twenty years ago, but never found a place on a record until now. Still, in this case, going solo doesn't mean leaving the band behind. Man in Motion is dripping with musical excess and includes a wide array of instrumentation throughout.
