A Real Horror Show
Little Shop of Horrors, the cult classic about a doo-wop-singing plant that eats people, is a musical based on a movie that is also most famous for its treatment as another movie — which is in part hilarious today because of our ’80s nostalgia, but was also hilarious in its day for spoofing the ’60s nostalgia of the ’80s. At this point, the story is so culturally ingrained that even those who have never seen the show will be at least somewhat familiar with it.

But Equinox Theatre Company is banking on bringing something a little different to its production of Little Shop. “Colin Roybal, our director and choreographer, is bringing some new spins to it,” says producer Deb Flomberg. “For one thing, we’ve chosen not to rent the puppets; instead, we’ve designed and built our own from the ground up. It’s a...unique perspective on how the plant is traditionally viewed.” How so? Flomberg declines to give too much away, but she does reveal that the plant is female, and that, yes, you’ll be able to tell. How? She won’t say.
