The Denver Zoo kicks off its summer series today, offering up action-filled animal shows, refreshed tropical exhibits and, for the littlest visitors, new things to climb on. Included in the price of admission are such amphitheatre productions as “Animal Stars” and “Africa’s Greatest Predators,” featuring lizard-throwing birds (not to worry — only rubber snakes will be used) and big cats growling and grinning on command. And at hands-on spots around the park’s habitats, guests will be able to ask questions directly of the zookeepers.

“We’ve taken what we do behind the scenes and brought it up front,” explains Tiffany Barnhart, director of communications for the zoo. And they’re not done yet: A new playground is set to debut in early June, along with interactive areas — such as the “Lorikeet Adventure,” where a visitor can pay a dollar to feed the birds — that will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Regular hours at the zoo, 2300 Steele Street, are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; admission is $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for kids (children under two admitted free). For more information, go to www.denverzoo.org or call 303-376-4800.
