An exhibit featuring the work of John J. Audubon makes its debut at the Longmont Museum & Cultural Center today. As the first solo exhibition of the naturalist’s famed bird illustrations in the state, the Longmont display will be the collection’s only stop in Colorado on its cross-country trek. Among the forty images on display are prints from Audubon’s 1838 four-volume series Birds of America, original oil paintings, watercolors and sketches.

Some of the artist’s personal effects are on display, too: A ledger containing Audubon’s handwriting, a personal seal and other possessions are all part of this special exhibit put together by the John James Audubon State Park Museum in Kentucky. “These things really bring him home as a human being,” says Erik Mason, curator of research and information for the Longmont Museum. Admission to the show, which runs through September 18, is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and free to museum members and children under twelve.
