The Great Outdoors

In celebration of National Trails Day, there are plenty of outdoor activities and especially trail-building service projects going on today around the state. But on the Front Range, the annual Arvada Trails Day event is certainly one of the least back-breaking and most family-friendly, which is perfect for outdoorsy folks not prepared to swing a pick or wield a shovel. Set along a loop between and encompassing Majestic View Nature Center and Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge (which claims the distinction of being the smallest urban wildlife refuge in the nation), the community-minded festivity is all about enjoying and learning to respect the great outdoors that exist right, so to speak, in our own urban backyard.

“Everyone finds a way to enjoy this summer day,” promises event coordinator Dave Olson of the event, which begins with a twenty-mile recreational bike ride at 9 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m. with guided trail walks, an eco-fair, live bird and animal demos, a demonstration garden, fun for kids and more. Park at Majestic View, 7030 Garrison Street; the interconnected Two Ponds is located on 80th Avenue, just east of Kipling. All events are free, and no reservations are required. Some food will be available, or bring your own picnic; get all the details at www.arvadafestivals.com.
Sat., June 4, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., 2011
