Headbanger’s Ball

Hair-metal homage/Broadway smash Rock of Ages opens at the Buell Theatre tonight, bringing the era of hairspray and Hollywood dreams to life with the music of Styx, White Snake, Bon Jovi and more. As the aptly named Drew Bowie, former American Idol contender Constantine Maroulis plays a Sunset Strip bar busboy turned rock star who leads the tale of love, stardom and rom-com-style heartbreak through the lyrics of campy ’80s radio classics.

While the story may connect best with fans of this particularly hedonistic era in rock music, the stage show also has plenty of dramatic girl-stealing moments, crooked bar-owner behavior and even an evil duo of city planners who attempt to tear down the whole scene. And though the performance is all-ages, some content, costumes and strip-club settings may not be appropriate for younger eyes.

Rock of Ages begins tonight at 8 p.m. and runs through June 26, with showtimes varying each day. For information and tickets, call 303-893-4100 or visit www.denvercenter.org.
Tuesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 & 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 & 7:30 p.m. Starts: June 14. Continues through June 26, 2011
