Save the Date To Go Skate

International Go Skateboarding Day dates back to 2004, when the holiday was established by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) to help promote the sport and mark the start of summer.

“Most of us skate every day anyway, so really, it’s just an excuse to have a big event and get a bunch of skaters together to have some fun,” admits Glen Gillingham, owner of the Boulder-based company Null Skateboards and a co-sponsor, along with Broomfield’s Crisis Skateboards shop, of this year’s biggest local event. “It’s always cool when a big crowd of skaters rolls down the street together.”

Gillingham and Crisis owner Jeremy Frankovis are throwing a 2 p.m. pizza party today at the skate shop, 6821 West 120th Avenue in Broomfield, to help build a crowd for the group skate before heading en masse toward the Broomfield Skatepark, 150 Lamar Street. Events at the skatepark will include a demo by the Null skate team, an old-school -style banana-board event, a high-ollie challenge, and best-trick contests on the park’s ledges and rails, followed by the Square State Skate BBQ Grill Out.

There are also Go Skateboarding Day events today at the Denver Skatepark and many other Colorado parks. “The important thing, today and every day, is that you get outside and go skateboarding,” says Gillingham. “And don’t forget to support your local skate shops and local skateboard companies while you’re at it.” For more information, visit www.nullskateboards.com and www.goskateboardingday.com.
