The Dark Lord

There is no filmmaker in history as simultaneously loved and hated as George Lucas. When his Star Wars trilogy was suddenly turned into a six-film disaster, enthusiasts felt that he’d betrayed them and, in the words of one fan in the film The People vs. George Lucas, “raped their childhood.” For those who have come to hate Lucas and all he and the Star Wars brand stands for, this film is for you.

The film isn’t just about Lucas-bashing, though; it examines how Star Wars became a global phenomenon and a licensing power-house. It turns the camera not just on Lucas and what he did to the trilogy when he released the prequels, but on the fans whose childhoods were supposedly destroyed by them. It's filled with commentary from bloggers, critics, filmmakers and fans; by the end, you’re likely to walk away with the same mixed emotions you walked in with, but they’ll be a bit more defined.

The People vs. George Lucas screens today through June 23 at the Denver FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue; tickets are $9.75. For more information and a list of showtimes, visit www.denverfilm.org or call 303-595-3456.
