Because of conceptual art — and because of the transition of photo-related and photo-based imagery from film to digital — photography seems like it’s the master medium of contemporary art. In The Anxiety of Photography, at the Aspen Art Museum, associate curator Matthew Thompson added his own take on the medium by bringing together forty cutting-edge works, all of which employ photographic techniques in distinct ways.

“For me, this exhibition really celebrates photography’s ability to be this and that,” says Thompson. “There are works that are made from four framed photographs violently collided together; from photo-paper that has been painted with ink and sewn; from a photograph that has been placed behind layers of excavated drywall. The show is very much about the physicality of photography and the photo-graph itself.”

Colby Bird, Liz Deschenes, Roe Ethridge, Mario Garcia Torres and Mark Wyse are but a few of the many international artists whose works have been included.
