Purple Mountain Majesties

Fourth of July festivities in Breckenridge fire up at 7 a.m. for the fifth annual Independence Day 10K Trail Run, which starts and finishes in Carter Park ($25 pre-registration at www.townofbreckenridge.com or $30 on race day). Afterward, catch the 9:30 a.m. start of the Firecracker 50 mountain-bike race – the third stop on the USA Cycling Pro Ultra Endurance Tour – immediately followed down Main Street by the town's annual parade at 10 a.m.

"The 10K is a really fantastic way to see some of the awesome trails in Breckenridge and get your workout in before grabbing a beer and getting a spot to watch the bike race and the parade," says Breckenridge Resort Chamber spokeswoman Rachel Zerowin. "We also have our 28th annual arts festival happening over the weekend, and we just announced that Rusted Root will be playing a free show at 2 p.m. on the Fourth at the Riverwalk Center. The evening wraps up with a free concert by the National Repertory Orchestra and a fireworks display set off from the roof of the Welcome Center. The best places to watch them are the Riverwalk Center, the Blue River Plaza, or right out on Main Street." For more information, visit www.townofbreckenridge.com or call 970-453-1734. – Colin Bane
