Tour de Breck

Last year, the League of American Bicyclists awarded Breckenridge its Silver-Level Bicycle-Friendly Community status. Now Breck’s going for the gold: Breck Bike Week gets under way today with a 7:30 a.m. Tour de France viewing party, all-day demos and guided “Tour de Town Trails” excursions starting at 10 a.m. Other opening-day events include the Mechanic Panic competition at 4 p.m. and the KSMT Kick-off Party at Fatty’s Pizzeria (106 South Ridge Road; free appetizers and New Belgium beers while supplies last).

“A lot of cycling festivals are either dedicated to road cycling or to mountain biking, and maybe they’ll throw in a kids’ race and call it family-friendly, but Breck Bike Week is truly a celebration of all aspects of the cycling community and of Breckenridge itself,” says event spokeswoman Rachel Zerowin. “We have rides, races, and clinics for cyclists of all ages and ability levels. And to fully appreciate how dedicated we are to being a bicycle-friendly community, don’t miss the mountain bike tour with Mayor John Warner on Sunday at 10 a.m.”

Other highlights include a 9 a.m. Wildflower Ride on Friday with experts from the Continental Divide Land Trust, and the Poker Ride for adults and Go Fish Ride for kids on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. Most Week events are free; for details, visit www.breckbikeweek.com.
