Up a Creek

Cherry Creek North isn’t known for being particularly shocking (unless you’re counting price tags), but this year, the Cherry Creek Arts Festival aims to be just that. Sort of. The pièce de résistance of this year’s diverse lineup is artist Phil Hansen, who’s made a significant name for himself creating art that solicits contributions from normal folks; for his current installation, he’s asking people to tell him about an experience that shocked them or “caused disbelief,” and while it’s still not known what he’ll do with the information (don’t worry — submissions are anonymous), you’ll be able to see it in action when Hansen finishes the piece live during the festivities this weekend.

The art party will feature a lot of less shocking but just as interesting things: First and foremost, the work of some 230 artists, 77 of whom are brand-new to the proceedings, will be on display — but the newly revamped Fillmore Plaza will also play host to an impressive array of live music and more random odds and ends than even the most ADD kid could take in. “Besides all the new stuff we’re doing this year, we have the usual range of everything from culinary demos to fitness workshops,” says CCAF spokesman Thomas Bryenton. “We have music, a beer garden, tai chi and hula-hoop demos, and Zumba and everything you could imagine.”

The festival kicks off today at 10 a.m. and lasts through Monday in Cherry Creek North, between Second and Third avenues and Clayton and Steele streets. The CCAF — unlike most things in Cherry Creek — is not for profit, and admission is free. For more infor-mation, visit www.cherryarts.org.
