Lean Zine Machine

Kelly Shortandqueer, co-founder of the Denver Zine Library, says that people often come into the library and ask how to make a zine. The Community Zine Workshop Series aims to answer that question in five Sunday sessions from July through September, after which aspiring zinesters will emerge with their own DIY publication.

"It usually feels a little bit overwhelming, so we thought we'd break it down into more manageable pieces," explains Shortandqueer, who publishes a zine by the same name. This series is meant for those who've never made a zine as well as those who just need a little motivation to get started again. "Sitting down and doing some writing at the Zine Library might be just what they need," he notes.

The workshops start today with a class on developing a concept and take participants through writing (July 24), editing content (August 7), formatting (August 21) and binding (September 4). Shortandqueer recommends bringing a notebook and a pen as well as a few ideas. There are tentative plans to have a big release party and reading of all of the completed zines at the end of the workshop series.
