Trimming the Fat

The first annual TreadFest Charity Mountain Biking Festival at Winter Park Resort benefits the National Sports Center for the Disabled and the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter, following in the fat-tire tracks of the Fat Tire Classic after that event’s title sponsor called it quits last year at the end of a twenty-year ride.

TreadFest trims the former three-day event down to a single-day festival celebrating all things singletrack. Take the opportunity to explore thirty miles of trails in the Tread Head recreational ride (starting line will be open from 7 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.) or go hard in the Valley Point-to-Point (the third stop in the Epic Singletrack Race Series) at 10 a.m., then head for the Grateful Tread Festival for bike clinics, BBQ and, yes, beer: Boulder’s Avery Brewing Company is the new presenting sponsor.

“The NSCD is excited about the direction that TreadFest 2011 is going in its first year,” says event coordinator AJ Skrdlant. “It’s a great environment for friends and family to get together to explore the trails that Winter Park has to offer, and the festival, with live mu-sic, food, beer and an expo area, will allow people to relax after a long day of riding.”

Registration is $75 for adults or $35 for youth at www.treadfest.com, or $25-$35 if you’re skipping the trails for the beer, BBQ and live entertainment.
