The underground electronica scene is booming in Denver — if you want proof, look no further than such residencies as Full Flavor Fridays, which is showcasing local talent as well as bringing in DJs like Brett Johnson from Dallas, who will be releasing his latest record (yes, that means free giveaways, including vinyl, CDs and more). Straddling the line between house and techno, Johnson has edged more toward the house sub-genre in recent years, but his complex, groovy rhythms display clear techno elements. Whatever you want to call his style, Johnson consistently fills dance floors. He's been signed to Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak's record labels in the past, and Johnson founded his own label, Aesoteric Records, back in '98; he also drops sounds on Bang The Box, where he collaborates with label founder Lance DeSardi and heavyweight JT Donaldson. From Fabric in London to Berlin's Cocoon to White Rabbit in Beijing, Johnson has traveled all over the world to spin his web of wonder; you can catch him at Appaloosa Bar on Friday, July 29, with resident Greg Campbell, for a mere $10 suggested donation.
