Ken Kesey was a counterculture star of epic proportions, and probably nothing showcased this fact better than the LSD-fueled journey he led across the country in 1964 on Further, the most psychedelic bus ever to enter our collective consciousness.

Along the way "from California to New York" Kesey and the rest of the crew (known as the Merry Pranksters) used their significant audio and visual skills to film the trip with the hopes of making a documentary after it was all over. The idea was to visit the World's Fair in New York City hot off the success of Kesey's novels One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Sometimes a Great Notion; a crew including Jane Burton, Ken Babbs, Page Browning and even the famed Neal Cassady sprinkled hallucinogenics in their wake as they traveled from coast to coast.

But that film was never finished; Kesey died while still working on the project, and most of the footage had never been seen. At least not until the Kesey family gave Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney and his colleague, Alison Ellwood, unprecedented access to the raw footage of the journey. The final product, Magic Trip: Ken Kesey's Search for a Kool Place, screens tonight at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder.
