Big Wheels

When ARTCRANK, the bike-poster extravaganza dreamed up by Minnesota promoter and bicycle enthusiast Charles Youel, first rolled into Denver last year, it got a lot of help from local movers Tran and Josh Wills and the path-crossing graphic-art and biker communities running rampant in this town.

"When I started ARTCRANK, the big idea was to create a common ground for a group of artists around something we all loved -- bicycles," Youel says. "At the time, I didn't know whether the same thing would translate to the audience: Would the posters in the show appeal across all of the cycling cliques and categories? Would roadies, messengers, commuters, mountain bikers, BMXers and whoever else find themselves standing shoulder to shoulder and actually agree on something?" The answer, he discovered, was a deafening Yes!: "If you asked me to describe the ideal environment for a successful ARTCRANK, it'd look a lot like Denver."

Beginning with a reception from 6 to 11 p.m. tonight and continuing tomorrow afternoon with a family-friendly party from noon to 6 p.m. at SuperOrdinary Gallery, ARTCRANK Denver 2011 will be ever-so-slightly toned down, but perhaps more to the point. Thirty local artists will have works on display, including more women than last year, notes Tran Wills. The peripherals include a film screening and a bike-centric fashion show by Baily Rose tonight, and a bike photo booth manned by photographer Sara Ford tomorrow, as well as food trucks and mural-making. SuperOrdinary is at 3126 Larimer Street; get details at http://artcrank.com/denver.
Fri., Sept. 2, 6-11 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 3, 12-6 p.m., 2011
