It’s tough to be a dude these days — tougher than it used to be, at any rate. “For 5,000 years, the patriarchy has been in place, and in the last thirty years, that’s changed significantly,” observes Jim Sharon, editor and curator of the recently released men’s anthology Ordinary Men, Extraordinary Lives: Defining Moments. “Guys are less dominant, less controlling; we’re dealing with changing societal expectations, and there’s a lot of confusion about how to be.”

Sharon wanted to offer an antidote to that fragmentation of men’s lives, and he started with his book — but that was just the beginning. The Whole Man Expo is a program designed to teach men how to live lives of balance. The method: a variety of speakers, talks and workshops covering subjects from dealing with divorce to tapping the universal consciousness. One such talk, for example, is “Elder-hood Rising,” during which Robert William Case will examine the process of aging for men. (“He wanted to call it ‘Manhood Rising,’ but he thought that’d get some chuckles,” Sharon notes.) But it’s not all talk, either: The expo will offer a variety of activities, like sounding-bowl mediation and even a jiu-jitsu demonstration.
