Reefer Madness, Redux

Reefer Madness, the smash musical inspired by the original 1938 propaganda-turned-exploitation film, is back for a second run at the Bug Theatre. “We were so honored last year by the response to the show,” says Deb Flomberg of Equinox Theatre Company. “Not only did we sell out every show, but we also received multiple award nominations. We realized it was a wonderful way to spend a summer evening, and so we wanted to bring it back for a second time.”

Initially released as Tell Your Children, the film aimed to educate parents about the dangers and evils of cannabis use. But it became a popular midnight movie and stoner cult favorite after being auspiciously rediscovered in the 1970s by attorney Keith Stroup, founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), a group that advocates for the legalization of marijuana.

The musical, Flomberg explains, “takes everything from the film and makes it over-the-top campy and silly. We’re poking fun at the politics of the time, and also the over-sensitivity. There are lots of really fun, silly dance numbers and high-energy music. It’s a roller coaster of hilarious musical fun.”

Reefer Madness runs through September 17 at the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo Street. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 (and typically sold out last year); to get yours, visit www.equinoxtheatredenver.com.
