The Mourning After

From increased airport security to strained global diplomacy, the events of 9/11 changed much more than the New York skyline. Granta magazine examines the effects in its new issue, Granta 116: Ten Years Later, and a panel of experts discusses the issue tonight at the Boulder Book Store.

“We have a window, ten years later, to look at the aftermath of 9/11,” says Granta editor John Freeman. “The mourning has been done, and we have a crucial, critical distance from the punitive strikes at al-Qaeda and the extracurricular wars of the Bush administration to see what has shaken out.”

The panel includes Boulder Daily Camera features editor Clay Evans, Alternative Radio founder David Barsamian, and University of Colorado and Boulder political science professor emeritus Frank Beer. “The chapter I am focusing on is about airport security and its intrusions on the individual,” Beer says. “I am going to talk about humility and humiliation — the fact that people seem to feel humiliation, and whether or not that is an important feeling, and whether or not they should be feeling something closer to humility.”

The discussion is free and starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Boulder Book Store, 1107 Pearl Street. For more information, visit www.boulderbookstore.com.
