A Gay Old Time

Gentlemen (and ladies), pull on your finest pair of pantyhose and strap on your heels: The Running of the Gays is back. After a successful inaugural jaunt last year, the youth-empowerment organization Art From Ashes is putting on another mini-“marathon” in an effort to raise money for its GLBTQ poetry and writing programs offered at Rainbow Alley.

The run begins at 11 a.m. with several heats of sponsored participants who will wobble, in red feather boas and BYO-heels, from Steuben’s, 523 East 17th Avenue, to J.R.’s, a mere three blocks away. “This isn’t a race, and there is no actual winner,” says Art From Ashes development director Erin McLauthlin. The focus is on the fun and safety of racers, and the donations collected for the youth programs.

An after-party at J.R.’s will follow, where prizes from local businesses will be part of a silent auction, as well as gifts for participants who raise the most money. This party portion of the event is 21-and-up, but across the street, Hamburger Mary’s will be offering a special race-day menu for the young ones, and Steuben’s is inviting runners back down the street for lunch, as well.

Last year, Westword’s Jef Otte was the first to cross the finish line, and he’ll no doubt be back to defend his title — but this time, in higher heels. For more information on how to participate or just be a supportive spectator, visit http://www.artfromashes.org/events.html.
