And Justice for Nancy

As the “final girl” in the first and third installments of the Nightmare on Elm Street horror-movie series, Nancy Thompson never received the respect and adoration that Freddy Krueger has. Now, Nancy — and Heather Langenkamp, the actress who played her — is getting what’s coming to her with I Am Nancy, an autobiographical documentary about Langenkamp’s experience as a slasher-film protagonist.

More About

The doc will screen tonight as part of the Denver Film Center’s Watching Hour series and will be hosted by Langenkamp herself.

“There are no Nancy dolls, no Nancy toys, no Nancy anything,” says Keith Garcia, programming manager for the Denver FilmCenter. Garcia notes that the character of Nancy went beyond the traditional toss-away “final girl,” as a role integral to the horror institution’s success.

This edition of the Watching Hour, which begins at 8 p.m., will also feature a question-and-answer session with Langenkamp after the film. The screening and talk will be followed by a party that includes an autograph session with Langenkamp while Nightmare on Elm Street films play in the lobby. Tickets, $10 to $12, are available at the Center, 2510 East Colfax Avenue or www.denverfilm.org. Call the box office at 303-595-3456.
Fri., Sept. 23, 8 p.m., 2011
