Letting Off Sparks

In the Rangeview Library District, once famous for being the worst-funded library district in the state, they don’t even call them libraries anymore. They call them “Anythink,” and they don’t charge fines, use the Dewey Decimal System or even expect patrons to bury their noses in books. In that spirit, they also don’t throw another boring old affair when they have a fundraiser; they offer Sparkopolis, a party that, according to spokeswoman Stacie Ledden, will endeavor to heighten all of your senses.

“One thing we emphasize at our libraries is that they’re interactive,” Ledden says. “It’s more about ideas. We wanted our fundraising to reflect that, too.” And how: Tonight’s benefit soiree sets off running with a series of food stations overseen by molecular-gastronomy king Chef Ian Kleinman, featuring latke and tamale bars, cocktails and a trademark liquid-nitrogen ice cream station. “You can’t miss the shattered gummy bears!” Ledden exclaims. Brandi Shigley of Fashion Denver will emcee the event, and she’ll be bringing fashionista friends Trisha Hoke (who will sketch people and their outfits) and Francis Roces (who will create a fashion/art installation from scraps of fabric and embellishments chosen by party-goers). And there will be live music, dramatic lighting and, well, some things yet to be divulged.

Sparkopolis starts at 6 p.m. at Anythink Wright Farms, 5877 East 120th Avenue in Thornton; tickets range from $50 to $75 and include a special $60 shuttle-bus option for urban partiers from Denver: A space-limited bus will leave Westword’s office, 969 Broadway, at 6 p.m. and make the return voyage at 10 p.m. Proceeds benefit Anythink’s proposed Nature Explore gardens for children; visit www.anythinklibraries.org/sparkopolis for reservations and details.
Sat., Sept. 24, 6-10 p.m., 2011
