Lone Tree Or Bust

The new Lone Tree Arts Center will unveil its first theater run of the season — and its own short life as a performing-arts venue — tonight with a comedy imported all the way from the rarefied climes of Creede, Colorado. But though it showcases the esteemed Creede Repertory Theatre, a summer-stock tradition from high in the mountains in one of Colorado’s least populous counties, this is no small-town production: Directed by esteemed Denver Center Theatre Company alumnus Jamie Horton and featuring at least two DCTC actors, Steven Hughes and Caitlin Wise, in its cast, Unnecessary Farce gets a rave from Lone Tree’s veteran PR guy, Chris Wiger, who used to hold a similar position at the DCTC himself. Old-home week? Perhaps. But the proof is in the setting: Also getting kudos from Wiger is the center’s nearly perfect 500-seat theater, a classic “not a bad seat in the house” kind of room, where the theater experience is truly intimate.

Wiger says the show, which is set in adjoining hotel rooms with doors that constantly open and close to reveal unexpected surprises, is just plain hysterical, a classic farce in every way. “It’s a great two hours where you can just go to the theater and escape, forget about the economy and politics and everything else.” And that’s exactly the way the folks running any new theater venue would hope to start up.
