“I think we’re all just a little bit off,” says Abbe Stutsman, executive director of Stories on Stage, and so it was easy to pull together Stories on Stage: Eccentrics Unlimited, the first full-length program for this year’s edition of the series. “We put a program together about folks that were just a little weird, perhaps a little different, slightly unhinged or nutty as fruitcakes.”

In other words, people like you, me and the man on the street.

And there’s a special surprise this round: Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker, the real-life married couple who played married lawyers Ann Kelsey and Stuart Markowitz on NBC’s L.A. Law. They’ll be reading stories by Dorothy Parker (“But the One on the Right”), Lorrie Moore (“The Jewish Hunter”) and William Faulkner (“A Rose for Emily”); the fourth selection will be from the winner of a Lighthouse Writers Workshop contest. “We’re in the throes of picking the story right now,” notes Stutsman.

“It’s a way for people to engage in theater of the mind,” she adds. "There’s a sense of community among the audience, and an intimacy that you don’t really get in regular theater. It’s a chance to use your imagination but still be part of a community.”

Eccentrics Unlimited runs at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. today at Su Teatro at the Denver Civic Theatre, 721 Santa Fe Drive; admission is $15 to $25, with sliding-scale and pay-what-you-can prices also available.
