True Colors

What’s the first step to improving the quality of your photographs? Head to Telluride amid the explosion of fall colors this week and start shooting. Making the most of the local landscape is at least part of the idea behind the second annual Telluride Photo Festival, says executive director Eric Moore, who has also assembled a first-class cadre of professional photographers and editors to lead this week’s workshops, seminars, symposiums, and portfolio reviews.

“Obviously, it’s a great time of year to come out and experience the changing fall colors in the San Juans in all their glory,” Moore says. “It’s a perfect setting to learn about and perfect the craft of photography, and we have something to appeal to any level of photographer or anyone who is interested in photography, from the weekend hobbyist to aspiring professional outdoor photographers.”

The festival opens today with an all-day workshop lead by Garth Lenz and runs through October 2. There’s a DSLR Film Festival on September 30, featuring films shot entirely with the video features on the newest generation of digital single lens reflex cameras, and next weekend’s portfolio reviews are a must for any photographer looking to break into the magazine business: Participating reviewers include photo editors from Outside, Skiing, Backpacker, Rock & Ice and 5280, among others. Passes start at $150. To register and for more information, visit www.telluridephotofestival.com.
