For this round of One Night Stand Theater, the folks who put together the dramatic readings and short stagings of play scenes decided to tackle the theme Witches Brew with an all-female cast. Weve been doing the program for maybe two and a half years, notes One Night Stands Jim OLeary, and last summer, we did an evening of horror stories. At the end of it, I realized we had cast so many roles for men it just worked out that way and I thought we should really have an evening that looks at horror from a female perspective.
So what does that look like? Well, there will be Shakespeare, the Brothers Grimm, Medea, poetry by Emily Dickinson and cannibalism, for starters. But the plans for One Night Stand often change right up till the last minute, so OLeary notes that the show will still be full of surprises. Its pretty casual, he explains. We try to take a subject and explore the different facets through short plays and stories. We never take what were doing too seriously.
One Night Stand also solicits local playwrights for work that fits the theme, which means that, Shakespeare aside, some of what youll see will be Denver-born and -bred.
