Double, Double, Toil and Trouble

For this round of One Night Stand Theater, the folks who put together the dramatic readings and short stagings of play scenes decided to tackle the theme Witches Brew — with an all-female cast. “We’ve been doing the program for maybe two and a half years,” notes One Night Stand’s Jim O’Leary, “and last summer, we did an evening of horror stories. At the end of it, I realized we had cast so many roles for men — it just worked out that way — and I thought we should really have an evening that looks at horror from a female perspective.”

So what does that look like? Well, there will be Shakespeare, the Brothers Grimm, Medea, poetry by Emily Dickinson and cannibalism, for starters. But the plans for One Night Stand often change right up till the last minute, so O’Leary notes that the show will still be full of surprises. “It’s pretty casual,” he explains. “We try to take a subject and explore the different facets through short plays and stories. We never take what we’re doing too seriously.”

One Night Stand also solicits local playwrights for work that fits the theme, which means that, Shakespeare aside, some of what you’ll see will be Denver-born and -bred.
