Draw a Bead on It

Don’t be surprised if you come upon a group of unibrowed people tonight at the Tennyson First Friday art walk wearing circle skirts and extravagant beaded jewelry. The gaudy dressers will be channeling the spirit of Frida Kahlo for the eighth annual Beads, Braids & Brows, an art show and celebration of the life of the iconic Mexican artist. Complete with sugar skulls, local artists’ Frida-inspired wares, and a pay-what-you-can Mexican meal from Comfort Cafe, the event will celebrate all things Frida. “I would say 90 percent of the guests dress up,” says organizer Joy Barrett. “Even little teeny kids come dressed as Frida, with unibrows painted on and stuffed monkeys.”

In the spirit of Day of the Dead, a whole gallery will be devoted to a series of shrines from artists paying homage to deceased loved ones. And year after year, people keep coming back to show their love for Frida. “I think what really amazed me was how she was able to capture her pain in her paintings,” says Barrett. “Instead of being a miserable person and complaining, she really expressed her frustration and misery in her artwork.”
