“Who wouldn’t want to be entertained and encouraged and distracted while running 13.1 or 26.2 miles?” asks Ron Bostwick, entertainment director for the Sports Authority Rock ’n’ Roll Denver Marathon and Half Marathon. “We’ve got 26 local bands along the 26.2-mile course, and we highly encourage residents in all the neighborhoods we run through to come out and listen to the bands and cheer on the runners.”

Last year’s race maxed out at 15,000 competitors and will be even bigger this year: Last-minute registration ($145) is available until the race reaches its new 17,000-runner cap, and Bostwick says it’s not just for the hard-core. “This race is a little bit different from some other marathons. A lot of runners will stop and dance and sing along when they find a band they like, then hop back down on the course and run on to the next band. It’s kind of like running in and out of 26 different clubs to see all of Colorado’s best bands in one morning.”

The race starts at 6:55 a.m. in Civic Center Park, making its way past Denver landmarks-turned-concert-venues including Union Station, Coors Field, City Park, Cheesman Park and Washington Park before heading back to where it began for a free finish-line festival and Smash Mouth concert at Civic Center’s Greek Amphitheater.
