Opportunity Rocks

They’ll be dancing in the streets today near the recently renamed Emily Griffith Technical College. Well, not so much dancing as cooking, giving haircuts and taking blood pressure. From culinary arts to cosmetology to cars, the school, at 1250 Welton Street, offers a diverse array of educational programs. But some fields of study — like floral design, accounting and professional sewing — aren’t as well known to potential students, says student event planner Tina Savage.

Enter today’s Opportunity Rocks the Block, a free exhibition of some of the school’s more than fifty career-path options. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., current students take over the sidewalks on Welton between 12th and 13th streets with live hair-cutting demonstrations, blood-pressure checks, a car show and information on the more than 350 courses offered. The afternoon throwdown will feature an opening “Parade of Nations,” along with music from international recording artist Manuel Molina and local rapper Dent, plus food-truck fare and tastings offered up from the school’s own kitchen.
