With rock-star looks and name recognition to match, Matthew Dear has come a long way since his humble origins in Kingsville, Texas. Taking a liking to Detroit techno after moving to Michigan as a teenager, Dear co-founded the electronic-music label Ghostly International (and its dance-floor-oriented offshoot, Spectral Sound) while enrolled at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Since then, he's accomplished that rarest of feats for any musician: achieving a measure of mainstream success (with 2003's refined Leave Luck to Heaven) while retaining his underground credibility (via dozens of twelve-inch singles released under cult aliases like Audion, Jabberjaw and False). Dear's Black City was one of the biggest electronic-music albums of 2010, and this year saw him touring with Interpol.
