Building for the Future

“There are cranes all over this town,” marveled one recent visitor to Denver, who wasn’t talking about birds, but an even rarer sight during the economic doldrums: building cranes. Suddenly, you can spot them all over downtown. With any luck — and a lot of planning — they’re helping to create structures that may one day be celebrated at the Mayor’s Design Awards, a program started under John Hickenlooper to “celebrate the growing number of Denver’s homeowners, small business owners and developers who have made design excellence a priority in their community.”

Today Denver has a new mayor, but the city’s commitment to good design remains. And tonight the winners of the seventh annual Mayor’s Design Awards will be revealed at 6 p.m. at the Mercury Cafe, a previous honoree, located at 2199 California Street. The ceremony is free and open; a reception will follow from 7 to 8 p.m., with snacks and a cash bar.

Last year’s honorees included buildings both old and new, ranging from the renovated Sage Building downtown to the Mackstaller Residence in Highland, the YesPleaseMore! pop-up store to the venerable Domo restaurant.
