There are cranes all over this town, marveled one recent visitor to Denver, who wasnt talking about birds, but an even rarer sight during the economic doldrums: building cranes. Suddenly, you can spot them all over downtown. With any luck and a lot of planning theyre helping to create structures that may one day be celebrated at the Mayors Design Awards, a program started under John Hickenlooper to celebrate the growing number of Denvers homeowners, small business owners and developers who have made design excellence a priority in their community.

Today Denver has a new mayor, but the citys commitment to good design remains. And tonight the winners of the seventh annual Mayors Design Awards will be revealed at 6 p.m. at the Mercury Cafe, a previous honoree, located at 2199 California Street. The ceremony is free and open; a reception will follow from 7 to 8 p.m., with snacks and a cash bar.
Last years honorees included buildings both old and new, ranging from the renovated Sage Building downtown to the Mackstaller Residence in Highland, the YesPleaseMore! pop-up store to the venerable Domo restaurant.
This years crop of winners are likely to be just as eclectic; for more information on the announcement ceremony, go to http://www.denvergov.org/MayorsDesignAwards/tabid/432441/Default.aspx>.
