It was a pretty sweet score for film students at the University of Colorado at Boulder when the program landed Alex Cox, acclaimed director of such indie-punk staples as Sid & Nancy and Three Businessmen, to teach screenwriting and film production. Luckily for everyone else, CU’s International Film Series is sharing the wealth.

“They’re showing everything I made between 1982 and 2002,” says Cox, who seems genuinely delighted by the tribute. That prodigious list kicked off with — what else? — Cox’s most treasured classic, Repo Man, which stars a young Emilio Estevez as a sullen punk who finds meaning and direction in auto repossession’s dubious code of honor and the search for an elusive Chevy Malibu.

As for Cox, he’ll be sitting out the actual screenings: “I’ll come along and introduce the film and then go have a beer, and then come back at the end and see what questions people want to ask. Once they’re finished, I don’t watch them anymore. Ronald Reagan used to watch his old films over and over again, but he was a special kind of guy.”
