When Adam Granduciel moved to Philadelphia nearly a decade ago, he met lo-fi rock wunderkind Kurt Vile and started the first incarnation of the War on Drugs. Vile has long since moved on, but Granduciel kept at it, and his songwriting evolved over the course of two EPs before the oufit eventually released a full-length in 2008, Wagonwheel Blues, on the Secretly Canadian imprint. An accomplished and thoughtful record, Wagonwheel established the group as purveyors of a kind of psychedelic Americana. Easy comparisons were made to Bob Dylan because of Granduciel's vocal phrasing, but this act could just as easily be compared to '80s experimental pop like World Party and Karl Wallinger's older band, the Waterboys. On the road in support of Slave Ambient, Granduciel and company are sure to bring plenty of their warm, bright energy to this show.
