Feeling Chili

Some chili is lean, some chile is green — and at today’s sixth annual Meanest Chili Cook-Off, all of the chili is bound to be...well, mean. Or at least spicy. But don’t let that scare you off: With twenty slots open for contestants competing to win prizes for the best green, red or white chile/chili, there’s bound to be something to your taste. And the tasters (you) are also the judges, so come prepared to select a first, second and third place.

“It used to be a private event that a friend of mine did at her house,” explains event spokesman (and Hatch Foundation founder and president) Brandon Hatch. “She outgrew the space and wanted to make it a non-profit event, so she handed the keys to me and said, ‘Run with it, expand it, do it for a good cause.’”

In this case, the event will benefit the Denver Fisher House, which helps families of military personnel being treated at the VA Medical Center. Hatch has made a few other changes, including moving the contest to November from January, but it’s once again based at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue. Each participating cook is required to bring three gallons of chili/chile; there will be a card in front of each crockpot listing the heat factor, whether or not it’s vegetarian or gluten-free, and additional tasting notes from the chef.
