Pretty Is As Pretty Does

In the moments between the merciless laughter that his prose induces and the abdominal pain that follows, you occasionally question how David Sedaris even made it to adulthood.

The essayist’s brief bio reads like that of a Real World character seeking a real-world job: A gay Greek second child, Sedaris emerged from the suburban wilds of North Carolina and turned his resulting melancholia into literary genius and endless belly laughs. And somehow, he managed to make the recollections that plague all of us into shared experiences much funnier than we remember.

The 54-year-old author has seven autobiographical collections and a book of animal stories to his name, and tonight Sedaris will talk about those tomes during a literary discussion at the Paramount Theatre — though the reputation that precedes him from other live shows suggests that things are likely to stray pretty far from the book world. Recent experiences, other book recommendations, previously unshared family shames and news of his longtime partner, Hugh Hamrick, have also been known to make the cut.

Although not all of his talk is pretty, it remains painfully funny. Sedaris will be on stage at the Paramount, 1621 Glenarm Place, at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $35 to $62.50. For more information, call 303-623-0106 or go to www.denverparamount.com.
