"Love Scene" is the first of the three songs on this release, and it establishes a mood like the alternative soundtrack to an early Michael Mann film. The slow gyre of volume in the song gives it a disorienting feeling, like being in some labyrinthine American version of an underground European dance club an hour before sunrise. The title track is reminiscent of vintage Giorgio Moroder making '80s disco music, but with the cheese replaced by a tinge of urgency. With the "Interlude" pieces linking the three songs, Dark Water feels like it was conceived as a cinematic piece of music. Closer "Mémoire" sounds like a resolution to the action and allusions of the first two songs. In the rippling duskiness of its dance-music leanings, Dark Water is aptly titled.
