Demon Funkies

Back on the Monkey
Self-released

With 2008's Punk Junkies, the Demon Funkies dug into some heavy guitar-riff-based grooves, many of which were steeped in thick distortion. This time around, frontman and guitarist Ryan Chrys rolled back the distortion somewhat while still providing tasty riffs on songs like "These Strings." While the Funkies were a trio when Punk Junkies was recorded, most of the six tracks on Back on the Monkey are filled out with keyboards and some tenor sax work by Pete Lamborne. As the band's moniker suggests, there's a fair amount of funk here, as on "Funny With the Oney," but the band takes a turn into outlaw country for the first time on "Make One Right," which features Chrys on banjo.
