Slip and Slide

Colorado has more than two dozen ski areas, but SolVista Basin at Granby Ranch may be the one most dedicated to families. Although night skiing and tubing aren't officially offered there until January 7, the resort is making an exception this week, just to keep its families happy. From now through Friday, the gentle SolVista slopes will be open after the sun goes down for some Winter Wonderland slipping and sliding amid sparkling holiday lights. And the fun doesn't end there. "Once they get to the bottom, we'll have carolers in Victorian dress, roasted chestnuts and a fire, wassail and hot chocolate -- and the kids can make s'mores," promises SolVista spokeswoman Lisa Craig. On Friday, horse-drawn-wagon rides will also be available. After-dark recreation runs from 5 to 8 p.m.; fees are $12 for skiing and $14 for tubing (or buy a combo ticket for $20 per person).

And there won't be any after-holiday letdown at SolVista, either. Craig says the resort will be hosting a month of free Saturday-night movies once the night skiing begins in earnest, featuring family flicks with snowy themes at 6:30 p.m. every Saturday.
