Writing on the Wall

Wes Jessup, the new director at the Longmont Museum, comes to Colorado by way of the Pasadena Museum of California Art; now, he's also bringing us a piece of sunny California, with the opening of a new exhibit from his former workplace. Street Cred: Graffiti Art from Concrete to Canvas follows the history and evolution of graffiti art in full California color, featuring work in a surprisingly wide canvas of styles by a who's-who of West Coast writers.

But, as Longmont Museum curator Erik Mason points out, our own vibrant Front Range graffitists -- artist/activists like Denver's Jolt (a Westword Mastermind) and Longmont's Gamma Acosta -- who've outgrown the primal thrill of the tag to explore more positive ways of splashing walls with their art, will also be represented by installations, both inside and outside the museum.

"I think people will be surprised by the variety of different types of work in this show," Mason says. "It's not all what you would expect to see, the wildstyle lettering. There's also some realistic work and sculpture, and even if you think you don't like graffiti art, you might want to try it."

Street Cred continues through January 22; exhibit admission is $3 to $5. In addition to tonight's reception from 7 to 9 p.m., the museum will host a weekly Director's Walk-through every Tuesday at noon, as well as a panel discussion with local graffiti artists at 7 p.m. on January 12.
