Love in the Afternoon

When Niza Knoll saw Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" during a visit to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, she was awestruck. "When you study art history in school, you see all the slides, but when you see the original piece, it's a whole different thing," she says. The iconic painting, featuring the Roman goddess Venus emerging from the sea on a half-shell, had a huge impact on the way Knoll created art.

Now she wants to see how it could impact others, which is how the Birth of Venus exhibit was born. Knoll invited a group of artists to create their own unique interpretations of the Renaissance masterpiece. The diverse group includes everything from D.D. Seaton's depiction of Venus with her skirt blowing up a la Marilyn Monroe to Abbas Khajeaian's more abstract interpretation. "It's very nice for people to come in and see how differently the same subject can be interpreted," says Knoll.
