Lady Of The White

Feeling floozy and boozy this weekend? Break out your ruffled finery and head for the Winter Carnival at Winter Park, where everyone's celebrating the 36th anniversary of the Mary Jane side of the ski resort, as well as the -- ahem -- colorful history of the "well-known madam and local lady of the evening" it's named for: According to lore, a certain grande horizontale once used her womanly wiles to acquire the land, known since the 1800s as Mary Jane's Placer.

The resort will offer $1 Mary Jane Ales and other drink specials to anyone dressed like Ms. Mary Jane on Friday or Saturday. "Think wild, wild Western saloon girl, circa 1800s, back when we were primarily a railroad and logging community," says Winter Park spokeswoman Mistalynn Lee. "The railroad and logging operations weren't the only game in town back in the Victorian era."

Other Winter Carnival activities include free bump clinics (Mary Jane is now better known for her moguls than her feminine curves), a snow sculpture competition and live music. On Friday night, board the Zephyr Express chairlift to wine and dine your favorite girl at the Wine Celebration Dinner, new this year at the Lodge at Sunspot, with a five-course meal featuring wine pairings presented by Robert Mondavi Winery ($125, benefits the National Sports Center for the Disabled). Call 970-726-1446 for dinner reservations and 800-979-0332 to book a room for your own private apres-ski rendezvous.

And on Saturday, make your way to the Mary Jane base area at 2:15 p.m. for prime photo opportunities and a piece of Mary Jane's birthday cake. For more information, visit www.playwinterpark.com.
